Every individual is entitled to a dignified life. This can only be achieved when his/her rights and freedoms are respected. This, however, has not been achieved as there is widespread of violations of civil and human rights.
Cases like child labor, detention of immigrants, racial segregation, genocides, slavery, torture, and executions, just to mention a few, have been on the increase in recent times. It, therefore, calls for a deliberate effort to fight these evils.
Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey endeavored to mitigate these evils by founding the Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund to support groups that advocated for human, civil and immigrants rights as well as the freedoms of participation and speech in Arizona. Their main support was funding groups agitating for the rights of immigrant groups.
There are organizations that have come up to advocate for the rights and freedoms of the vulnerable groups in the society. Some of these organizations include;
- Amnesty International
It is a global organization fighting for human rights. It has over 1 million subscribers and members’ worldwide, in over 160 countries. It also deals with other thematic concerns such as women’s rights, torture and the rights of refugees and other violations in a given state.
- Centre for Constitutional Rights
It is a body dedicated to advance and protect the rights and freedoms of individuals as provided in the American constitution and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It is a non- profit educational and legal body formed in 1966 by lawyers representing civil rights movements. It emphasizes the use of law in creating social change.
- The Centre for Victims of Torture

Through training, research, advocacy and healing services for the torture survivors, they create an ideal rehabilitation environment for victims of torture. They provide a bridge between the society and the torture victims with the aim of helping them cope and live a dignified life.
- United Nations High Commission for Human Rights
They advocate for the rights of refugees. They provide emergency assistance services like sanitation, shelter, clean water, food, blankets, healthcare, household goods and sometimes food for refugees in camps in war tone countries or those affected by natural disasters like floods, earthquakes, hurricanes, etc.
- American Civil Liberties Union
It protects the liberties and rights of immigrants through advocacy, litigation and public outreach. The ACLU has been fighting legal battles on behalf of the immigrants for over 25 years.
These immigrants have ever since been facing discrimination basing on their race, arbitrary detentions and even denied access to justice. The ACLU through the ACLU Immigrants’ Rights Project is dedicated to advocating for the civil rights and civil liberties of the immigrants. It also advocates against the discrimination of immigrants.
- Human Rights Watch
It works by reforming the harsh, ineffective and outdated detention and deportation of immigrants. They also reveal and help amend the persecutions and bad working conditions which the unauthorized refugees endure and are hesitant to report due to the fear of being deported.
- Physicians for Human Rights
The main agenda of the organization is to stop the mass atrocities like genocides, war crimes and crimes against humanity that causes severe mental and physical harm to individuals.
They investigate the atrocities using forensic science, psychological examinations, and epidemiological research. The results from the investigations are used to charge the perpetrators in a court of law.
