The OSI Group: Consistently Expanding To Serve More Clients Globally

For the OSI Group, expansion has always been the key to their success. Started in 1909 as a neighborhood meat market in the Chicago area, by 1917 they had expanded to serve more communities and businesses. The company then expanded further in the 1950s when they began to provide meat patties for a fledgling fast-food franchise called McDonald’s. In the 1970s, the OSI Group expanded their services further and began providing packaged meats to restaurants and supermarkets throughout Illinois. Since then, the OSI Group has embarked on a program of swiftly progressing global expansion.

The OSI Group is one of the world’s largest food processing companies. Their headquarters is in Aurora, Illinois and they have about 80 processing facilities located in 17 countries in North, South and Central America, Europe, Asia and Australia. The company provides beef, fish and chicken, vegetables, sauces, pizza, sandwiches and more to businesses worldwide. CEO Sheldon Lavin and President David McDonald have led the OSI Group on an extensive program of global expansion over the past 25 years.

The company expanded into Eastern Asia in 1992 when they opened their first facility in Beijing, China. They also opened a beef plant in Japan in 2010. The OSI Group opened a poultry raising and processing facility in China’s Shandong Province in 2010 and one in Henan Province in 2012. The company expanded into India in 1995 and opened a vegetable processing plant there in 2012. They also built a new facility in the Philippines in 2017. The OSI Group also has facilities in the Baltic States, the Czech Republic, Finland, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia, Sweden and elsewhere in Eastern Europe.

The OSI Group has also expanded the markets they serve by acquiring companies. They set up a joint venture with Edeka, Germany’s largest grocery store chain. The OSI Group acquired Flagship Europe in 2016. This company provides dips, mayonnaise, poultry and sauces to British dining establishments. Soon afterwards they acquired Baho Food, a Dutch firm that provides 18 European nations with snack and deli products. In 2017 the OSI Group expanded again by acquiring HynekSchlachthof GmbH, a German meat business that operates beef slaughterhouses near cattle ranches.

And the OSI Group plans to continue to expand by opening additional facilities and acquiring valuable companies. Their goal is to better serve their customers by providing natural, organic, healthy food products and a more diversified product line.
