How Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin Have Courted Freedom

The foundership story of the Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund is a peculiar one. The fund solely exists to contend with the government by holding it accountable for any misuse of office to infringe on minority rights.

The fund did not exist until a then power-corrupted sheriff, Mr. Arpiao, aggrieved by the way Lacey and Larkin were exposing his underhand and rogue policing activities, decided to hold and detain them unconstitutionally. The two, stubborn and enlightened, decided to pursue justice in court. They sued the authoritative and feared Mr. Arpiao, losing all the way to the 19th court hearings at the Supreme Court.

In the lawsuit, they claimed that they had been wrongfully arrested and that their rights were violated by the sheriff when he detained them illegally. The court ruled in favor of the plaintiffs and awarded the two decorated journalists the compensation of a whopping 3.7 million dollars debited from the county’s ledger.

The sheriff had been so infamous for the tyranny he had subjected minority groups that Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin used the lawsuit winnings to open a fund. The fund, the Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund, would aggressively fund any litigation that sought punitive action against law enforcers who bias persuaded them into illegally discriminating members of minority groups.

The Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund first and foremost spreads awareness to the people of their rights and how to fight for them within the bounds of the law. The fund emphasizes that rights;

  • are expensive,
  • should be universal
  • should be equal
  • should not be abused
  • should be fought for, in their case, sued for

The fund, through its founders and sponsors, Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin, amply demonstrates just how valuable rights are and the tenacity that minority groups should have to live in a liberal environment.

First of all, the journalists took the risk of exposing the high and mighty sheriff. They wanted to expose the way he was infringing on other people’s right. The sheriff, having got used to the impunity with which he had been running riot, unsuccessfully tried to intimidate them through detention.

They demanded to have their freedom back and seek justice in court for the injustice. Patiently and unfettered, the two appealed to the highest judiciary jurisdictions. The compensation awarded, the two sort to assist other daring liberal minds to set more precedence that rights are expensive and valuable through litigation. Unfortunately, the precedence set seemed to conclude that almost all sheriffs and other law enforcement have such little regard for the rule of law. The whole scandal had not even been racially instigated but was rather an ugly manifestation of personal differences between the sheriff and the two. The two had cast him into bad light by him for;

  • Abusing his authority to use reasonable violence to subdue resisted arrest
  • Mistreating the prisoners, he held in county jails
  • Discriminating against the Hispanic community
